August 25th Newsletter

Last week we kicked off a new initiative: 4 vendors are now donating their food at the end of the day to the Community Cupboard Food Pantry in the Unitarian Universalist Church in Medford!  We would like to thank these vendors, as well as our two dedicated volunteers, Peter Taylor and Dana Gallop, for making this possible.  Last year between 70 and 90 families received food from the Food Pantry, and we are glad that we can contribute to their important mission of reducing hunger in the Medford community.
Fruitfully yours,
The Board of Directors of the Medford Farmers Market

Notes from the Market Manager A weekly rundown of your farmers market

What better way to enjoy the final weeks of summer than by strolling down to your friendly neighborhood farmers market?  Sit out in the sun for a spell to listen to our delightful musician, or come hang out with me at the market manager’s booth and draw a sidewalk picture or two. Usborne Books is back with us this week, just in time for you to pick up some back-to-school reading material.
Summer produce is still in full-swing but is starting to fade in to cooler season crops. Just a reminder to get it while you can! Also, in case you’ve missed it, Springbrook Farms is now selling beef from their stand, all the way in the back.  For a complete list of this week’s vendors, check out our website.

The Perfect Medford Market grill-down
Summer might be drawing to a close, but there is still time to have a market-inspired cookout!

August is coming to a close, which means that there are only a few weeks left of summery weather before fall starts nipping at our noses.  What better way to celebrate the last weekend of summer than by having a cookout – with Medford Market produce, of course!  Below are a smattering of grill suggestions.
Corn – peel back husk to remove silks, then return husks to natural position being

careful to cover as much of the kernels as possible, or remove husk entirely and cover in tin-foil.

Eggplant – slice in to 1/2 inch-think rounds, toss with olive oil and balsamic vinaigrette.

Onion – quarter onions and skewer, or hollow out a 1 inch pit in a whole onion and fill with a mixture of butter and fresh herbs.
Peaches – remove pit, halve and dress with honey and balsamic vinegar. Serve with ice cream or crumbled blue cheese for a sweet and savory desert.
Summer squash – slice lengthwise, toss with olive oil and place on grill
Tomatoes – cherry tomatoes can be skewered, larger tomatoes can be cut in half and grilled for a few minutes on each side.
